Grand Bahama and Visiting Florida Girls Soccer Teams Win One Game Each

Grand Bahama Island 2009 – The Freeport Rugby Football Rugby Club field was buzzing with activity this past weekend as Westminster Academy from Fort Lauderdale brought their varsity boys’ and girls’ soccer teams to Freeport to play two local teams. The boys’ team was here last year and enjoyed it so much that the girls’ team came to play this year as well.
The girls played their first game Friday night at 6:pm. The team was selected from players from the Girls’ Developmental Soccer Program and other youth players who took part in the GBFL last year.
In the first game, Grand Bahama was leading 2-1 at the half and went on to get another goal to make it 3-1, but the American girls got their second wind and ended up with a 4-3 win over Freeport, scoring their winning goal in the last two minutes of the game.
Scoring for Grand Bahama was: Courtney Moss (2 goals) and Mia Whylly (1 goal).
In the game on Saturday morning, Grand Bahama came out with a vengeance. After the bitter loss the night before, the Freeport girls fought to the end and came out victorious with a convincing win of 6-0.

Scoring for the Grand Bahama team on Saturday were: Mia Whylly (3 goals), Courtney Moss (2 goals), and Nadia Thompson (1 goal). Kiana Baldwin was awarded Player of the Tournament for the Grand Bahama team.
Coaches Donnie and Mary Knowles were very pleased with the performance of their team considering the limited amount of games that the team took in before playing the American team. They would like to thank the young men who are always willing to play friendly matches with their girls and credit their win to the valuable game experience they gain when they play these talented boys.
Plans are already in the making for a bigger tournament next year as coaches from Florida have other schools that are interested in coming to Grand Bahama.
